Pucon & the Chilean Lake District (1/17-20/2010) - Pucon is WONDERFUL! - one of the most beautiful and fun mountain summer/winter resort towns we have been to.

The Chilean Lake District is on the northern edge of the Patagonia region. , Everywhere you look in Pucon, with its German appearance, is a postcard perfect view.

Pucon is located on scenic Lake Villarrica with snow covered Volcan Villarrica (an active volcano – see photo, yes, that is volcanic gas coming out the top!). Pucon was worth every minute of the 7-hour drive south from Santiago on Chile's excellent highways.

Pucon is also known as Chile’s adventure capital with almost every outdoor activity imaginable - snow & water skiing, river rafting, hiking, climbing to the volcano crater, fishing, natural hot-spring spas, wind surfing, sailing, boating, sunning at the beach, parasailing, paintball, horseback riding, kayaking, biking, golfing, zip line rides, bird watching, and more.

We visited Pucon during Chile’s summer with perfect weather where did a class III/IV river rafting trip on the upper Trancura River (see photo) - great fun and Pat stayed in the boat the whole way down! We also drove the long gravel road to Parque National Huerquehue where we hiked around breathtaking Lake Tinquilco and to the waterfalls of Ojos del Caburgua (see photo).

Staying within easy walking of downtown Pucon, we enjoyed many of the very nice restaurants night and day and the black sand beach at Pucon on Lake Villarrica where we spent a day enjoying life like a native Chilean.

Arriving in Pucon on Chile’s national election day was fun because the town burst into party mode when the new president was announced (see photo).

Some history... Pucon was founded in 1883 as an Army base to control the crossing border to Argentina through the Andes Mountains. In 1904, the Chilean government gave the land to a leather and timber business partnership that brought over 20 families of German immigrants.

Santa Cruz & the Colchagua Valley (Wine Country), Chile (1/16-17/2010) - Welcome to the Chile’s premier wine region!

Chile has many quality wine regions and the Colchagua Valley is considered the one of the best with the best infrastructure (i.e. hotels, winery tours, tastings). It is often compared with the Napa Valley of California. On the afternoon we arrived we did have a chance to visit one of Chile’s best wineries (Viu Manent), had a private tasting, and great learning experience. The Viu Manent winery is built like a hacienda and inspired us on how to design our future home for outdoor living (see photo).

With expert help coming in from Australia and New Zealand, Chile’s wines are very good, especially considering the price. Chile’s Chardonnays are not over-oaked and many of their red wines (i.e. malbec, syrah, cabernet sauvignon) have improved to the fine wine level winning international awards. We stayed in the quaint and unspoiled town of Santa Cruz and spent time in their pretty and calming central square (see photo).

We cut our time short in the Colchagua Valley because it was Chile’s national election day and they closed down all alcohol sales (sadly, including wineries). They are pretty passionate about their politics in Chile and have had fights break out in the past. Before we left the Colchagua Valley, we had dinner at the Santa Cruz Grand Hotel that overflowed with Latin American charm, hospitality, and beauty.
